…and these Russian tea cakes are classic, yummmm…
Nobody else liked this, but c’mon, beautiful badass girls kicking butt on beautiful waves? I can’t get enougha that! Until I looked it up on IMDB, I was totally convinced they just recruited three surfer girls for this flick. Go ahead and believe it yourself…we are we...
just anutha Swedish pop invasion. ...
I am so happy to be “working in the city”. One of my greatest delights is perusing the various and sundry gastronomical venues. Here’s a rundown…...
Andrea fell in love with Franz Ferdinand after seeing them on SNL – the fact that they’re Scottish didn’t hurt their chances any – and she got me hooked. We went to see them last night. They rock the house, capital L-O-U-D. Totally contagious energy. The drummer and bass...
Had a good time watching this one – beautiful panoramic scenes filling your vision while you can feel the bass of huge spaceships with those great Star Wars sound effects move your clothing. And of course who could get bored watching a 50 foot tall Natalie Portman? Ready for the next big...
Another full dose of trippy David Lynch atmosphere, alternating between anything-goes playfulness and suspense of an intensity limited only by your imagination. Don’t expect much traditional resolution, but if you like David Lynch, you’ll enjoy this...
This beautiful atmospheric pop is lifting me up during my job search. It’s like Death Cab For Cutie’s Benjamin Gibbard’s optimistic younger brother discovered a magic electronics studio. It’s really polished, as in Top 40, computer-stabilized-vocals polished, but it is so...
Bring your expectations of standard Hollywood conventions to this movie and you’ll be left hanging in a big way. I always preach that it’s great to break the rules and veer away from the formulas in movies once in a while (check out this excellent article on “plot...
I swore I would never touch Zynga again after Mafia Wars took over my facebook life (and RL). But I have a soft spot for all perversions of Scrabble on my smart device, dating back ten years to pass-off games on my Zaurus (man I loved that thing, so far ahead it was like I was from anothet...
This was such a kickin’ good time in so many ways. An entire green village was available pre-show for us to explore. We got a nice little booklet explaining all the green steps taken by Jack on the tour. He donates 100% of profits to charities – YES 100%!! and he did the same on the...
A classic road song from his new Highway Companion CD, produced by Jeff Lynn. Also try “Big Weekend”, Travelling-Wilburys-style fun – takes me back a couple weeks to my trip down to see my brother Dan. We may have arrived at the LAN party place too late, but we saw “The...
You could have probably heard me groan when I first heard the premise for this movie – about two women in midlife, one who never “grew up” and one who did a 180, rejecting her wild past. But they pulled it off with style (and lots of great lines from Goldie, she rocked :> ). And...
At times too close to reality for comfort, the laughter in this one was a bit strained. But that’s its charm, too. Globalization here we come! A nice easy primer on Indian culture that turns into a romantic comedy. And there’s music and dancing, too, of course. One thing’s for...
Smokin’ hot blues, so sweet to hear. Wipes all the McMusic you have to slog through these days right off the map (along with practically everything else). True...

Repeat… repeat… repeat… the driving bassline, the beautiful harpsichord/dulcimer/autoharp-ish piano, the anti-shuffling drums… can’t get enough… Also enjoying Vampire Weekend (like everyone else did months ago)… A-Punk is The Beat in a...
Wren’s recent poetry assignment turned out this gem…
I looked in the corner and there sat fear, small and hunkered, His big, googly eyes darting around the room, not missing a thing. I heard him, quietly, slowly mumbling to himself, staring blankly at the wall. When he stood up, his eyes darted toward me and stayed on me. He slowly strode across the room with big steps. Although his head was facing straight, his eyes stayed turned to me. I felt a little bit sorry for him, But when he shut the door without a sound, I got the chills.
I got duped into cleaning out the entire garage last weekend, under the pretense that I was setting up the music studio I’ve been dreaming of for decades – how could I resist? Well, it was a lot of work, and we threw away a trash container and recycle bin’s worth of old crap, but Andrea remained true to her word – we have liftoff! Here’s the barebones gear of the current setup. Everything is scrounged from ancient cruft, with the exception of the acoustic pickup (the little white circle on the cheapass video mixer), you stick the gum right on the guitar body, it works great! Everything is mixed and amped to match the level of the drums. The girls and I practiced up and cranked out Yellow Submarine in no time, and Nick stopped by to belt out the vocals. Yeehaw!!
The girls have been whipping up creative little plays for us ever since they had a “dress-up bin” from which to pull costumes. Here are scenes from “Little Dead Riding Hood” (with the Prevost clan) and “The Noodle Master” (with the Dobbs clan). Best entertainment around!

Andrea packed her bags and headed to the beach with her book club buddies this weekend. The girls and I (and Grammy on occasion) had fun playing Age of Mythology, Tribes, soccer, wrestling, cooking cinnamon rolls, walking the dogs, getting takeout at the Gillespies (including Guitar Hero and Carcassonne games), going for pizza with the Prevosts… wow, we did a lot! :>
Today Reiley and I shopped (and shopped and shopped – took us three times to remember everything :>) and cooked a full-course meal, with the common ingredient being miso, a delicious bean paste popular in Asia. The menu:

About two weeks ago, Wrenny and I prepped a full-course meal. The theme: peppers! We used green and red and orange across three recipes. The menu:

My favorite cookbook is called Friendly Foods, by the best vegan chef I know, Ron Picarski. I’ve sworn to cook everything in it before I die, but I’m not even halfway done. Ron turns non-vegetarian fare into “friendly” fare with style – his goal is not to imitate but to improve. One important ingredient he uses is called seitan, a great meat alternative made from the protein in flour. I’m currently obsessed with cooking, and because my zeal is an order of magnitude beyond reasonable, I attempted to make seitan from scratch.
